iPad Restore

This describes how to put an iPad into recovery mode so it can be restored or updated from a Mac computer.

Recovery mode can be used to re-install an iPad if things go badly wrong. Note that any information (files, photos, etc) which are on the device but not stored or backed up to the cloud (probably iCloud) will be erased by the restore process.

This method assumes you have a Mac available to do the restore from.

Turn the iPad off. Hold down the power button until you see the "slide to power off" option, then slide it to switch off. Wait until you see the iPad is completely off (can take a few seconds).

Before continuing, make sure the Mac is fully updated. Connect your iPad to the Mac. Use a USB cable to connect your iPad to a Mac computer running macOS.

For older iPads with a home button (the button on the center-front under the screen) hold down the home button. For newer iPads (one without a physical button on the front) hold down the volume up button until the recovery mode screen appears.

On newer Mac the Finder (desktop) will display a message showing the iPad has connected. On older iPads you will need to use iTunes to do this. Release the button on the iPad if you are still holding it at this point.

You can click "Restore" or "Update" on the Mac now. The "Update" option will install any updates available and might fix a "broken" iPad, without erasing anything. The "Restore" option will erase the iPad, install the latest OS, and reboot it so you can set it up again like a new device.

Follow any prompts which appear on the computer. Note that the OS is quite big and might take a while to download and install. Proceed with the on-screen prompts to restore or update the iPad as needed.

After the iPad is restored and has rebooted, proceed to set it up like a new device.
