BBEdit

Entry 28, on 2004-08-24 at 20:08:50 (Rating 1, Computers)

I have had to recover some data from a damaged database today and I needed to examine and repair a plain text file containing the recovered data.

There was quite a lot of data and I needed to do a series of automatic search and replaces in some quite complex ways. I used a brilliant program called BBEdit to do this.

BBEdit is a Mac only text editor which opens big files quickly and allows you to work with the text in almost any way imaginable. Not only do I use it to fix damaged files but also for writing code (HTML, C, etc) and storing large chunks of text data.

The search and replace (using GREP) facilities, syntax colouring, text formatting, and many other features are indispensable!

I use BBEdit as well. I really like it. Makes me feel sorry for the poor Windows users.
